A good quality pair of trimmers is a great investment for any homeowner or garden enthusiast. There are different types and sizes of hedge trimmers on the market today, so it’s important to shop around to make sure you get the right tool for the job. The less expensive and more popular choice are electric models, which come in a variety of blade lengths. These are usually powerful enough to handle 1/2" branches, and newer models often also feature reliable electronics, self-sharpening blades and minimized vibration. A good quality pair of electric trimmers will come with a warranty, and should feature a host of safety features, such as auto-shut off for the blades and a lockable switch to prevent accidental starts. These are essential if you have children, since hedge trimmers can be very dangerous if the proper safety precautions are not followed. Larger gas powered hedge trimmers are much heavier, but you don't have to contend with a cord like you do with an electric pair. These tend to be more expensive than electric models, but are more powerful. A mid-sized pair of gas hedge trimmers will usually handle 3/4" branches, and cut through thick shrubbery without jamming or slowing down. Again, these should have built-in safety features, and should not be used without first reading the manufacturer’s safety instructions. The size and type of hedge trimmers you choose will depend on your budget and by how much shrubbery you have to contend with on your lot. Remember also to choose the correct blade length for the job you're doing; many models will handle a number of different cutting angles to make trimming easier.
