There are generally two types of lawn fertilizer spreader: drop spreaders and rotary spreaders. Drop spreaders drop the fertilizer or granules straight to the ground, thus providing a more controlled distribution of the fertilizer. Another type that is a bit easier to use is rotary. It distributes fertilizer in a radial pattern, at a larger spread, and generally at lower distribution levels – which means you can cover larger areas. The problem with a rotary type is the fertilizer cannot be controlled as well as with a drop spreader, and may be thrown into non-fertilized areas. Both models today are produced with simple plastics and rubber, outweighing the durability of older, steel based spreaders by a few years. The major problem is the “hopper”, a device which distributes the fertilizer in a given manner. Plastic tends to be thicker than steel, and the size of the hopper opening tends to be larger. It requires more effort from the gardener to push this kind of lawn fertilizer spreader to get the same output from an old steel based spreader. So, when spreading, test the handle angle, handle height, and hopper spread setting for optimum use (and don’t over fertilize!) Lawn fertilizer spreader is a handy tool for those who care about their lawn and need a quick and easy method of delivering fertilizer to it.
