Pruning shears are one of the most important tools in any gardener’s shed. Whether you choose an elaborate set with other flip-out attachments, an expensive pair of ergonomic hand grips or a simple, basic set, garden shears are a must-have.

Used mainly for cutting garden flowers, pruning shears are also perfect for more precision work like tending bonsai or pruning roses. Choose the shears according to your intended use and price range, though take care to make a good investment to avoid rusted or broken shears. Strength and precision are the most important factors: you want to look for a sharp blade, and crisp cut. The blades should be stainless steel to avoid rust, and should be periodically sharpened.

Quality pruning shears feature a clasp or loop to lock the blades. This is particularly important if you have small children in the house or if your kids like to help you in the garden. More advanced models will often be styled like a Swiss Army knife and will feature other useful blades and tools as foldouts. These kinds of shears tend to be much more expensive, but if you like to have all your tools handy at once, they’ll definitely be your choice.

Shop around and you’re sure to find the pruning shears that feel right and work best for your garden. They’re absolutely indispensable when trimming rose bushes and cutting flowers, and belong to the select group of tools every gardener says they wouldn’t be without.
